General Design Logic and Principles: Most stop valves use a clockwise-to-close, counter-clockwise-to-open design. The core logic is similar to tightening a bottle cap: when operated with the right hand, clockwise rotation is more ergonomic, ensuring a tight seal between the valve seat and valve disc through mechanical structure. For example, ordinary water pipe stop valves are often marked with the letters "S" (Shut) and "O" (Open), or use arrows to indicate the water flow direction; operation requires turning in the indicated direction. This design prevents accidental operation in emergencies-if not clearly marked, users might instinctively operate as if tightening a bottle cap, and the clockwise-to-close design aligns with this habit, reducing the risk of accidental opening and leakage.

 

Exceptions in Special Scenarios: High-pressure valves: In some high-pressure scenarios (such as LNG stations and chemical plants), valves may be designed in reverse, i.e., clockwise-to-open and counter-clockwise-to-close. This utilizes the force of water or gas impacting from above to help tighten the valve stem, reducing the impact of high pressure on the stem and extending valve life.

 

Special Gas Valves: Pressure reducing valves for oxygen cylinders, hydrogen cylinders, etc., have an opening and closing direction opposite to the conventional method. Pressure needs to be adjusted by rotating the handwheel (e.g., clockwise to open, counterclockwise to close) to adapt to the gas characteristics.

 

Installation Position Influence: Some slide valves and butterfly valves, due to limited installation space or special pipeline layouts, may have a clockwise opening and counterclockwise closing configuration. However, the operating direction is usually clearly marked on the valve body to avoid misoperation.

 

Operating Precautions:

Avoid Forced Operation: Forcibly tightening may cause the valve stem to break or damage the valve body. For example, in a case where a heating pipe burst in a residential area, the property management staff used a wrench to forcefully tighten the shut-off valve, causing the valve stem to break and resulting in a leak.

 

Confirm Flow Direction Markings: Before installation, check the arrows or markings on the valve body to ensure the water flow direction is consistent with the valve design. Reversed installation may lead to poor sealing, leaks, pipeline vibration, or even valve damage.

 

Emergency Handling: If the markings are unclear, gently turn the handwheel to test the resistance (resistance is usually higher when closed), or refer to the general rule of "right for closing, left for opening," but prioritize the markings to avoid misjudgment due to special design.
